Sind and Lena Empty Sind and Lena

Post by Lena Vershmitz Sat Mar 07, 2015 10:38 am

Lena walked casually through the mist-covered night toward Keep Elariel. A quick combination of Tin-enhanced senses and metal-seeking Iron - obscured by Copper of course - assured Lena the coast was clear as she approached the house. The noblewoman and her steward were an odd pair indeed, clearly hiding all sorts of things, and that bothered Lena. She also did not appreciate the tall one getting in her face for simply speaking her mind. Honesty was a virtue, was it not? A Terrisman of all people should respect that.

She glanced up at the lit balcony of the room she knew to be Voïra's and shrugged. Perhaps another night she would leap up there and take a look around, seeing what intel she could gather on Dorlin and his mistress. Tonight's purpose held other more pressing intents.

Lena slipped around back to the servant's entrance and into the kitchen. Even since Broulliar taught her how to burn Copper she had been much more successful acquiring food stuffs undetected. She put most of her stash in a sack, pocketing a few choice items for herself.

On the way back to the shipyard, she tossed the sack into a specific skaa hovel. She had devised a system in her mind to make sure she helped each group equally, as much as possible. Back at the warehouse she decided to scout around, looking for other exits, possible spots Tineyes could set up to spy on their meetings, ways to convert this place into a safe house if necessary. There were not many options on that last thought, but she would make what suggestions she had to Get and Dat at their next meeting.

As she snooped about, she noticed the strange-eyed girl had built herself what could only be described as a nest in the corner of the warehouse. Lena hopped down and sat on a crate near the girl, snacking on a small loaf of rich bread.

"So what's a little girl doing following Terrismen through the night into abandoned warehouses? How old are you anyway?"

Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a small piece of cooked meat and held it out to the girl.

"You hungry?"

Sind had apparently pulled apart a few slats in the corner of the warehouse, making a small hole that presumably led to the crawlspace underneath the building. The girl sat on the edge, her feet dangling in the darkness; there was a loose unease that made her small frame twitch, ready to either leap up or slip down at a moment's notice.

When Lena offered the meat, Sind wordlessly accepted, cramming the food in her mouth and rolling it around slowly without chewing it. After a few moments the strange child gulped it down and spoke.

"Met Dorlin before. Spoke of changing world then. It was appealing."

Troubled eyes darted around the room, from the crates, to the rafters, to Lena's kneecaps and then to the hole.

"Skaa rebellion is opportunity. Age is not known, and largely unimportant."

"Thank you for the food."

Lena hopped down from her crate and joined Sind at her hole in the floor, letting her legs dangle as well.

"It's just strange because kids are usually more interested in surviving than in changing the world."

The Mistborn glanced curiously into the crawlspace then tried to make eye contact with the young girl.

"You don't know your age? Are you an orphan, too?"

She pulled out a piece of bread and offered it to her.

"I have some more food if you need it."

From what Lena could tell, the hole opened into a dark, cramped area between the floor of the building and the aging foundation below. The dry odor of rat dung wafted up, faint but unmistakeable. Sind looked up at the Mistborn, long strands of dark hair falling into her muddy brown eyes.

"Yes, survival is important. Consuming, hiding, sleeping. Once these are mastered, what then? Look forward, toward tomorrow. Or next century."

"One of them will be better. Maybe."

When the woman offered Sind some bread, the young skaa blinked, slowly, closing first one eye and then the other. "Flesh is preferred. Yeast and flour... they do not satisfy." The girl looked at the food, her eyes traveling past the hunk of bread to study a vein on Lena's wrist, her small pale face drawn into a curious, calculating expression. "Sharing freely is rare. Is something required?"

Lena's nose wrinkled at the scent of the crawl space. She remembered having slept in such malodorous places when she was first on her own. Her alcove now was not much better, but it was quite clean in comparison. She laughed as if Sind had just made a joke.

"That sounds like a pretty boring life - consuming, hiding, and sleeping."

At Sind's dismissal, Lena shrugged and placed the bread back in her pocket. Her mind flashed back to her self five years younger, stumbling into Urteau with nothing but the clothes on her back. Feelings of hunger were not uncommon for her back then. She could not imagine facing the same at Sind's young age.

Back in the present, the Mistborn's eyes softened sadly toward the strange girl. She shook her head slowly.

"No, I don't want anything in return. I remember being like you, Sind - young, alone, hungry. I just wanted to do what I could to help you."

Lena looked at Sind with genuine concern before glancing back into the crawl space.

"You could come stay with me if you'd like. It's not as...smelly."

"Not boring existence; fearful, difficult, yet- exhilarating? Needs stronger than duty, stronger than desire. At the edge of the burnlands, laws lose meaning."

When Lena noted her similarities to the younger girl, Sind smiled, uneven teeth flashing, giving an edge to an otherwise innocent expression. "Perhaps, not so alike. Sometimes hungry, yes, but never alone. Age," the girl repeated solemnly, "largely unimportant."

Sind leaned over the hole she had made in the flooring, and inhaled quietly through her nose and mouth. "Smelly, yes. Not unlike an ashmount up close." Large dark eyes rolled toward Lena as the urchin glanced back at the Mistborn, still bent forward at a sharp angle overlooking the darkness below. "Didn't consider before it was pointed out." The small person straightened up, and said "You are kind." It was said almost without inflection, as if Sind was commenting on the weather.

"Ever heard a Mistwraith scream? Ever been so close you can stick out a toe, touch it?"

Lena laughed and slapped Sind on the shoulder.

"Oh come on, kid! Mistwraiths aren't real..."

Her face suddenly grew sullen.

"Are they?"

Sind rolled her eyes towards Lena, a taut, knowing smile playing about her thin ragged lips.

"Ghost stories, only frightening if true."

A look of slight confusion clouded the girl's face.

"Named yourself Mistborn. Walk mists often? Ever?"

Lena pointed emphatically toward the door as her face contorted in offense.

"I'm out in the mists every night and I've never seen or heard anything that resembles a Mistwraith."

She crossed her arms and grumbled softly. "Never out in the mists? Please."

As a thought sprang to mind, Lena released her arms and pointed at Sind.

"Besides, if the stories are true there's no way you got close enough to touch one."
