Paying Dues
The night after Venture's ball, Mist enshrouded the city, much as it always did. Thick and constant the mist hung in the night, hiding deep secrets and those who carried them.
Two Mistborn darted from rooftop to rooftop, dodging and pursuing with lurching Ironpulls and jerking Steelpushes. Seemingly randomly, the larger of the two lead the way through the twisting alleyways, feet never touching ground. With a grunt, he shot out a coin at a nearby wall, pushing himself out over the water of a canalway, coming to a stop as he throws down another coin. Breathing heavilly he positions himself to balance on the single coin, one hand pushing down on the metal as his other hand and legs spread out to balance him. He looks up to check on his protoge'.

Re: Paying Dues
In the year since Lena had met Broulliar, they had often engaged in these types of training sessions, bounding around Urteau as they Pushed and Pulled off of coins and various metal around town. The first few times were quite embarassing for the young Mistborn and she wondered if Broulliar would abandon her training and leave her to her own devices, yet here a year later she has grow more agile with her movements, though still not as graceful as her teacher.
A couple moments later she mimics his action above the canal waters, only she wore an elated grin. She too was panting - partly from the exertion that Pushing and Pulling took on the body and partly from the adrenaline coursing through her veins.
"Does this ever stop feeling awesome?"

Re: Paying Dues
She could make out the glint of white teeth under Broulliar's Mistcloak.
"No, it doesn't."
With a heave, he shoots back up into the mist, landing deftly on the stone rail of one of the narrow bridges spanning the small canals. The tassles of his Mistcloak waft around him, mimicking the playful movements of the mist its self.
"You've come a long way since we started. You should be proud."
He tosses her a wineskin after taking a drink himself.
"But have you thought about what you'll do with your skills? Mistborn are very rare; we are the movers and changers in the world. You could do much with your skills."

Lena follows him to the bridge, but lands beside the rail near Broulliar, leaning back against it as she drinks from the skin. She drinks deeply as she considers his question.
"Not really, no. The men I'm currently working for clearly want to see change, not only in this town but in the whole Empire, but I'm not sure what part I play in that. My role in our last task was something that did not require any particularly Mistborn traits, just some of the basic skills I've picked up as a thief here in town. I mean, sure, I Soothed a few folks, but a charming enough person could have done that without Allomancy."
She looks across the bridge into the Mist, feeling her future as clouded by uncertainty as the night was to those without Tin.

Re: Paying Dues
There's a clatter from a nearby alley. With a screech a feral cat runs off down the street. Broulliar looks on with annoyance before turning back to Lena.
"Hmm. You are unusual, Lena. You are perhaps the only Mistborn in the Final Empire capable of choosing who they serve rather than being tied to a House. I hope you know what a singular opportunity you've been presented."
He sounds wistful, almost... envious.

Re: Paying Dues
Lena inhales deeply and releases it in a sigh. She laughs to herself as she recalls their initial introduction.
"My strange and unusual qualities are nothing new to you, Broulliar. You pointed out my uniqueness when we first met a little over a year ago."
She turns to face the man whose face she has yet to fully see. She oftened imagined what it might look like and hoped one day he'd trust her enough to let her see, but for now her eyes narrow as she catches the tone in his voice.
"Wait a minute. You mean to tell me that you serve a noble House? I find that hard to believe."
She laughs as she leans back against the rail again.
"Why do Mistborn have to serve anyone? Can't we just do our own thing?"

Re: Paying Dues
There's a heavy silence looming in the air before his reply. He seems to consider his words carefully, facing off in the direction the cat had come from.
"I serve; even a High Lord serves in his own way. There's always someone pulling the strings, making the calls behind the scenes though."
He turns to regard Lena, face hidden in shadow.
"It is the duty of Allomancers to be the knives of a Noble House. This is our calling, our purpose."
The words sounded flat, recited.
"Why do we serve? Because we always have, and because we are expected to."

Re: Paying Dues
Lena keeps her face pointed out over the misty waters. Her next words are tinged with both hints of rebellion and fear.
"And if we don't?"
"And if we don't?"
